Cathy Macdonald - Director

Her work has aired on television across New Zealand, UK & Europe, the US, Africa, Asia and the Middle East, has launched major global brands online, won awards at marketing, film and advertising industry bodies, and even gained a teeny tiny cult following. Central to Cathy's work is an intellectual curiosity and a knack for crafting authentic characters in both familiar and exotic worlds.
Based in the UK for nearly a decade before returning home, Cathy wrote and directed 26 episodes of Toon News, winning Promax Young Creative of the Year in Europe.
She moved into music TV, exploring global festivals for MTV's Rockfeedback. She was also awarded the International Graduate Scholarship to complete her Masters in Screenwriting at the renowned Central St Martins College London.
Instead she spent a short period in Cambodia filming landmine survivors for NGOs. Her first short documentary Roger the Real Life Superhero was selected at 11 international festivals. Her second Turangawaewae, a Place to Stand, was funded by US based Real Ideas Studio.
Back home, Cathy directed episodes of TVNZ's Lets Get Inventin alongside TVCs and web campaigns before focusing on working with actors and developing narrative fiction. She recently completed her first fictional short The December Shipment which in 2015 was shortlisted from a global field of nearly 4500 applicants for the Lexus and The Weinstein Company Short Film Competition. Joey Horvitz, SVP of Short Film at Weinstein gave The December
Shipment 5/5 saying "The performances were fantastic…loved the attention to detail in the production design… beautifully directed."
