Congratulations to Kerry Warkia and Kiel McNaughton, of Brown Sugar Apple Grunt Productions, who took out the SPADA Independent Producer of the Year award for their outstanding work conceptualising and producing the ground-breaking feature film Waru. Created in collaboration with nine female Maori filmmakers, Waru is made up of eight vignettes, each a 10-minute single shot. The film made its international debut at the Toronto Film Festival, opened ImagineNATIVE the world's largest indigenous film festival, and won Best Feature Film at the SWANZ awards.
