Ava DuVernay was the first black woman to win the best directing achievement at the Sundance Film Festival, and her career has included numerous accolades since. Her television show, Queen Sugar, employed all female directors. And she's constantly trying to uplift the voices around her. "Know your crew members by name. They are the lifeblood of your film" and "never tell an actor it was good when it wasn't" are just two gems of advice she offers filmmakers.
