Boy's piracy also troubles broadcasters

Onfilm reports that the news of Boy being illegally downloaded ahead of its international release won't just concern filmmakers, with broadcasters equally worried about the growing incidence of peer-to-peer file sharing in New Zealand which is now higher than in the United States. "Illegal downloading is becoming more of a concern to broadcasters," NZ Television Broadcasters Council chair Rick Friesen told Onfilm. "Over the last year, over 900,000 illegal downloads of television programmes in New Zealand have occurred - and that's about four times the rate it happens in the US." Friesen says growing broadcaster fears about piracy were behind the ramping up of on-demand services, with the hope that on-demand options will lower illegal file sharing.
