British MP, Jo Swinson is accusing children's television producers and broadcasters of a lack of strong female characters. She believes that the constant barrage of princess-like characters stunt the self-confidence of young girls. She also notes that there is an overall lack of female lead characters, citing a 2007 study which showed that almost two thirds of lead characters in children's programmes in the UK were male. Swinson told The Daily Mail that "A lot of children spend many hours watching children's TV and take many messages from it subconsciously about the way the world works. It gives them the message that boys and men are in charge and women are in a supporting role." Read more here.
