Australian Teachers of Media (ATOM) is looking for an assistant editor for its two quarterly journals, Metro and Screen Education.
Metro specialises in essays, reviews, interviews and analysis of Australian, New Zealand and Asian features, shorts and documentaries. It also covers television, radio and new media.
Screen Education is aimed at primary, secondary and tertiary educators across the curriculum, but particularly in the areas of film, media and English. It publishes practical classroom ideas, lesson plans and activities, along with essays, study guides and updates on new technology.
Duties include:
� Serving as first point of contact with writers - confirming receipt of manuscript, liaising with writers during the production process, managing the peer-review process for refereed articles
� Commissioning articles that reflect current issues and trends in media, film, television, radio, new media and media education
� Structural editing and copyediting of articles to house style (short opinion pieces to academic articles of 3000-4000 words), making text changes in InDesign documents
� Proofreading journal prior to publication
� Working closely with the editor, freelance designers, briefing on any layout considerations
� Maintaining articles database
� Assessing unsolicited manuscripts.
Skills / qualifications sought are:
� Tertiary qualification in publishing / editing (or equivalent practical experience)
� Previous experience in journal publishing, with a proven history of editing academic articles (background in education or educational publishing, particularly English / media, would also be useful)
� Demonstrated knowledge of, and interest in, film, media, television and popular culture, particularly Australian and Asian cinema
� High-level skills in InDesign and Microsoft Word
� Proven ability to work to deadlines
� Attention to detail.
