Champion speaker-upperer for women, Geena Davis, joined stars, royalty and politicians as she spoke out against stereotyping at the recent launch of a new super-agency for women.
Michelle Bachelet, the former president of Chile, who is the first head of the new UN Women agency, was given a standing ovation as she set out their agenda.
The creation of UN Women "reflects global concern at the slow pace of change," she said. "It is no longer acceptable for young girls to be taken out of school or forced into early marriage."
She vowed that the agency, a merger of four other agencies for women and given a 500 million dollar a year budget, would be a "global champion" pressing governments for "a new era of gender equality." Read more about the UN Women launch here.
