Pretty Brutal secures place at Documentary Edge

Posted Wednesday 03 Apr 2013

A documentary film about the Roller Derby circuit and the people who participate in this fast-growing sport has secured a spot at this year's Documentry Edge film festival.

With little industry funding available for emerging documentary makers, the making of Pretty Brutal reflects the fight and the DIY spirit of Roller Derby. Local producer/director and WIFT member, Monica De Alwis learnt to shoot on skates, and drove the film making process assisted at times by a tiny crew of talented creatives. See Monica's profile on the website for more information about this talented and determined filmmaker.

Pretty Brutal captures a microcosm of the world's fastest growing female sport - the first production of its kind to delve into local Roller Derby at an intimate level, exploring surprising characters beyond the fishnets and mini-skirts.

Pretty Brutal has achieved a place in this year's 8th Documentary Edge Festival and a world premiere screening will take place at

Auckland's Q-Theatre on 12 April at 5.00pm followed by a screening on the 15 April at 12.30pm.

Tickets  $11.50 - $17.00 with discounts for groups.
