StarNow brings Multi Award Winning Short Filmmaker to Wellington
HollyShorts 2013 Best Film winner Mitsuyo Miyazaki to present her short film to Wellington audience
StarNow is excited to be bringing to Wellington, HollyShorts 2013 Best Film winner Mitsuyo Miyazaki and Jacob Halajian. While they are visiting, StarNow in conjunction with the New Zealand Film Commission will be hosting a screening and Q&A of the winning short film Tsuyako on the 20 November at the Film Archive.
"We are really excited to be bringing such a talented filmmaker to Wellington" says StarNow's General Manager, Markets, Jessica Manins. "It's a fantastic opportunity for us to showcase what a great place Wellington is to make films".
Mitsuyo Miyazaki is a talented writer-director, whose directorial debut short film Tsuyako has screened at over 70 film festivals worldwide, winning 42 awards including Best International Short Film at 2 Academy Award qualified festivals and Future Filmmaker's Award and Audience Award at Palm Springs International Short Fest. Her most recent short film A Better Tomorrow was produced by The Weinstein Company and sponsored by Lexus, premiered at the 2013 Festival de Cannes.
Mitsuyo will also be premiering her short film Tsuyako at an event hosted by StarNow and the New Zealand Film Commission on Wednesday 20 November at the Film Archive. "I am so thrilled to be able to share Tsuyako with a Wellington audience" says Mitsuyo. "Tsuyako was actually inspired by an old photograph of my grandmother who had to sacrifice so much of her life for the family. So it's a story very close to me" says Mistuyo.
Tsuyako tells the story of Tsuyako who lives a demanding life as a mill factory worker, obedient wife, and loving mother. When an old female lover, Yoshie, pays a surprise visit, she reignites a passion in Tsuyako. After Yoshie witnesses how Tsuyakos new family mistreats her, she begs Tsuyako to leave with her to Tokyo, to live the life that they had always dreamt of together. Tsuyako must choose between her duties as a woman and the promise of freedom, while struggling to maintain the Japanese traditions of culture and respect of her family.
