WIFT member Linda Niccol's screenplay, POPPY, is one of four finalists in the screenwriting section of SR The Socially Relevant Film Festival. The feature length script tells the story of a girl with Down syndrome who wants to go all the way with her life.
She wants to drive in the Burnout, become an equal partner in the family business, which is run by her brother. And she wants a boyfriend. She has to fight to be recognised for her talent and abilities. The story is set in Kapiti. The heroine is inspired by Poppy Anderson, a young woman who just happens to have the extra chromosome that causes Down syndrome.
Poppy is attending polytech in Hawkes Bay and training to be a chef. Niccol hopes the international recognition will help her and producer and fellow WIFT member Glenis Giles attract funding for the project. Niccol will attend the award ceremony in New York on Thursday 20th March.
