ATC Annual 2 Week Workshop

Posted Tuesday 04 Nov 2014

The Next Stage is Auckland Theatre Company's annual two week workshop and festival of new play scripts in development and a vital part of their mission to bring ambitious, theatrically exciting, original New Zealand stories to the stage. At the conclusion of each work-in-progress performance they welcome comments from the audience in a conversation with the cast, playwright and director. You don't get that at the movies!

They are presenting three new promising scripts as part of THE NEXT STAGE this November:

PLAY 1

A DOLL'S HOUSE by Emily Perkins - A contemporary response to the original play by Henrik Ibsen

Director: Colin McColl

Award-winning writer Emily Perkins is known most recently for NOVEL ABOUT MY WIFE and THE FORRESTS. A DOLL'S HOUSE, an ATC commission, is her first play.

Friday 14 November 7.30 pm

Saturday 15 November 2.30 pm

PLAY 2

ALL THE THINGS YOU COULD HAVE BEEN IF NOT FOR ME by Arthur Meek - A thirty-something year old brother and sister are forced to grow up when their parents decide, most amicably, to break up

Director: Andrew Foster

ATC audiences will be familiar with Arthur Meek's mainstage debut TREES BENEATH THE LAKE and ON THE UPSIDE DOWN OF THE WORLD. Recipient of the Harriet Friedlander New York Residency, Arthur returns to the rehearsal room with a new comedy.

Saturday 15 November 12.00 noon

Sunday 16 November 3.30 pm

PLAY 3

2080 by Aroha White -A cautionary tale of a future New Zealand which houses millions of refugees from the US and the Pacific Islands in strictly-controlled economic zones

Director: Katie Wolfe

Aroha is a seasoned performer in new New Zealand plays - most recently in SUNSET ROAD and Nancy Brunning's debut play HIKOI. A graduate of Toi Whakaari, Aroha's show A LOVE TAIL won Best Newcomber at the Fringe Festival in 2010.  A reading of 2080 was presented in the Matariki Development Festival at Circa Theatre earlier this year.
