Lumina Dance Show Opens Tomorrow

On behalf of WIFT member Shona McCullagh, we encourage Auckland members to take in The New Zealand Dance Company's third season of contemporary dance, Lumina, premiering at the Maidment Theatre, Auckland 19 - 22 August 2015.

This is the NZDC's third season triptych of new works inspired by the intersection of movement and dynamic lighting design. Two New Zealand choreographer/composer duos and a Dutch choreographer present works in a programme of compelling light, sound and movement.

Three dynamic choreographer/composer teams, who speak fervently of cultural transformation spearhead Lumina, created in co-production with the prestigious Holland Dance Festival.

Louise Potiki Bryant (Ngai Tahu), winner of the Harriet Friedlander Award 2014 and world-renowned composer and AV designer Paddy Free (Pitch Black) explore the state of liminality. Drawing from Maori myth and contemporary urban experience, the world premiere of their work In Transit is a richly layered collaboration.

Malia Johnston's new work, Brouhaha, devised with her long standing creative partnership team of composer Eden Mullholland and AV designer Rowan Pearce create a bold, loud and rich world in which dancers are explorers of colour and artful transmitters of rhythm, harmony and emotion.

The company's first international commission by Dutch/American choreographer Stephen Shropshire will create a trio, The geography of an Archipelago, in a dynamic co-production between The New Zealand Dance Company and the prestigious Holland Dance Festival.

Set and costume designer Kasia Pol (Mau Dance Company) weaves all three works into an environment that responds to each of Lumina's creative collaborators, lit by Jo Kilgour.
