How do you go about summing up the delights of Dunedin in a few sentences? You don't try. Take the easy route instead: grab a chair next to the fire and settle into this special Dunedin Collection, which offers the sights and sounds of a city edged by ocean, settled by M?ori then Scots, and overrun each year by flocks of students, many of them carrying guitars. Timed for Otago Anniversary Weekend, the 30-strong Dunedin collection from NZ on Screen features scarfies, bagpipes, fashion from 2007 and 1973, and an albatross whose wings stretch three metres from tip to tip. As Dunedin mayor (and former broadcaster) Dave Cull says in his specially-written introduction, the city's common thread is "creative impulse; it shows up everywhere - in music, fashion, film and TV production, art and architecture." The influence of legendary record label Flying Nun is clearly hard to miss - alongside definitive documentary Heavenly Pop Hits, look out for classic music videos from The Chills, The Verlaines and The 3Ds, and an RWP piece featuring Chris Knox and Alec Bathgate. There are also glimpses of Dunedin and surrounds in classic early episodes of Spot On, gold rush drama Hunter's Gold and big screen hit Scarfies - plus docos on iconic artists Ralph Hotere, Jeffrey Harris and Cilla McQueen.
