WIFT's only Oamaru member, Maddy Maxwell has been busy with the Filmmakers in Schools Film Festival. The results of her work (with fellow filmmaker Bridget Ellis) will be revealed on September 22nd at the Oamaru Opera House.
The night promises to be a showcase of the work of over 100 local students. Following their involvement in assisting schools with the Gigatown School FilmCompetition last year, Maddie and Bridget set up Filmmakers in Schools to build on their work to encourage and inspire young students in their area in the field of filmmaking.
"It's such a buzz for the mainly primary school students to see their work on the big screen. They put a huge amount of creativity into their projects. Friends really enjoy the movies too and are looking forward to voting for their "People's Choice" on the night," says Maddy.
The students have come up with a diverse range of stories, with everything from Shakespeare to Scifi. The result promises to be a fun and affordable night's entertainment for the whole family.
The judges - Liz King (Art Gallery educator), Bryce Taylor (student filmmaker) and Vanessa Kelly (actor) have had a preview of the 5 minute short films this week. Says Vanessa: "This wonderfully imaginative and talented group of local youth will be expos-ing their film talent on this night not to be missed! Come and support our up and coming young film makers."
Following the screening the films will be available for viewing via Maddy's film website: www.astonesthrow.co.nz
Tickets will be on sale at the Opera House from one hour before the 7pm start time. $5 per person/ $15 family price.
The organisers are really grateful for the support of the local community both in providing locations and in sponsoring prizes for the teams. Main sponsors include Portside, Soundplus (Dan Lewis), Paper Plus, Fotographix, Metro, the Opera House, Tees St Cafe, and Steampunk HQ.
