Caption Producer - part time.
Able is New Zealand's home of captioning and audio description and strives to bring you more accessible media. Able captioners produce and edit subtitles for programmes shown on air, which are accessed by Deaf and hard of hearing viewers. We are looking for a new part-time Caption Producer.
Our Caption Producers have a love of words, syntax and language. If you often find yourself in the role of 'grammar and spelling police', you will be welcomed into a team of like-minded individuals.
A fast touch-typist with a well-honed attention to detail and sense of accuracy, you will fly through the training provided. A sound general knowledge, interest in current affairs and popular culture and a cool, calm approach to 'live to air' deadlines will help you excel in this role, and you must be comfortable using speech recognition software, although no experience is necessary. Editing experience or an Arts degree or similar is preferable for this entry-level position.
If you are a grammar geek looking for a new set of skills, please apply for the role of Caption Producer today. This part-time role involves permanent shifts of Tuesday and Wednesday evenings 4.30pm to 11pm and Sunday 10.30am to 7pm, totalling 20 hours per week.
Able is committed to paying its employees the New Zealand living wage.
If you would like to apply for this role, please email your cover letter, CV and a completed Able application for employment form to recruitment@able.co.nz, specifying vacancy number 12.
If you would like more information about the role, please contact recruitment@able.co.nz.
Applications for this position close Monday 26 September 2016. All applications will be treated in the strictest confidence.
Vacancy - trustee
Are you interested in helping to shape the future of captioning and audio description in New Zealand? The Media Access Charitable Trust, as part of its board rotation policy, is seeking a new trustee with experience in the Deaf and hard of hearing sector. The Media Access Charitable Trust governs the not-for-profit organisation, Able, which provides captioning and audio description for New Zealand free-to-air television broadcasters.
Captions are just like foreign film subtitles and enable the Deaf and hard of hearing communities to access television. Audio description is an alternative audio track that helps blind and vision impaired people obtain more enjoyment from television.
The trust board comprises five trustees - including two sector representatives - one offering the perspective of the blind and vision-impaired sector and one vacant role offering the perspective of the Deaf and hard of hearing sector. Our trustees have a collegial approach and are very supportive of the chief executive and employees of Able.
The new trustee should be enthusiastic about accessibility and will demonstrate the following personal skills - a team player, strong communication skills, integrity, and a positive and constructive manner that is sensitive to differing approaches. Trustees should also bring experience or skills in one or more of the following areas: finance, law, technology, television broadcasting, governance, marketing, communications, community relations and disability policy.
The trustee positions are voluntary, but travel and meeting expenses are reimbursed. The Media Access Charitable Trust board meets quarterly in Auckland.
Please apply by forwarding your CV and a cover letter detailing your experience with the Deaf and hard of hearing sector to recruitment@able.co.nz. Applications close Friday 30th September.
