The NZ On Air- and TVNZ-funded television film Jean, based on the life of Jean Batten, has been shortlisted for nine awards in the 2017 New York Festivals International Television and Film Awards.

The New York Festivals Grand Jury selected Jean as a finalist in nine categories - Best Direction, Best Camerawork, Best Actress, Best Screenplay, Best Sound Design, Best Original Music, Best Visual Effects, Best TV Movie and Best Drama Special.

'I think that's a record for one production,' said producer Paula Boock. 'It's pretty special, and since we have no NZ television awards anymore, these international competitions really help in getting recognition for excellence and overseas sales for our productions.'

Made by Boock and Donna Malane of Lippy Pictures (who are also WIFT members), the 90-minute television film was directed by Robert Sarkies and starred Kate Elliott (pictured). It was funded by NZ On Air and screened on TVNZ 1's Sunday Theatre last September.

Here's the full list of finalists.
