Check out this wonderful piece of history, the 1989 Koha documentary from NZ On Screen, on the inspiring Ramai Hayward (pictured above in a still from the documentary). A pioneer of New Zealand film and star of classic 1940 movie Rewi's Last Stand, Hayward is credited as this country's first M?ori filmmaker, camerawoman, and scriptwriter. A WIFT patron, she received several awards honouring her achievements: in 2005 she received the inaugural Lifetime Achievement Award for her contribution to M?ori filmmaking at the 2005 Wairoa M?ori Film Festival, and the following year she was made a Member of the NZ Order of Merit. The NZFC has named their new theatrette The Hayward Theatre and now offers the Ramai Hayward Scholarship for M?ori Woman Directors. Hayward passed away in 2014.
