Cannes films feature large in fantastic NZIFF line-up

Posted Tuesday 03 Jul 2018

An unprecedented 30 films direct from the Cannes Film Festival are confirmed to screen at NZIFF 2018! Eleven of those are from the Competition section of the festival, including Palme d'Or winner Shoplifters, Jury Prize winner Capernaum and Best Screenplay winners (tied) 3 Faces and Happy As Lazzaro. Meanwhile, Birds of Passage will open the NZIFF in Auckland on Thursday 19 July, and Cold War from Polish director Pawel Pawlikowski (Ida), winner of the Best Director prize, will screen as the official closing night film of NZIFF.

"It's always a mad scramble for us, as the Cannes screenings are inconveniently close to our programme cut-off," NZIFF director Bill Gosden says. "The up-side is that New Zealand audiences get to be amongst the first in the world to see the very latest and best in international cinema."

Yes, there's always a silver lining in the land of the long white cloud!

Congratulations to all members involved in this year's NZIFF selection! Whether behind-the-scenes or out in front, your roles are vital, and we acknowledge your commitment and hard work. We also know there are many more of you whose credits cannot be listed in the NZIFF programme. We acknowledge you too, and we're sorry that we don't have access to all the NZIFF credits.
