Women ruled the Cannes Film Festival red carpet on Saturday 12 May; 82 women marched in protest against gender inequality in the film industry. Just 82 films have screened in competition at the festival since 1946 (compared to an estimated 1,645 by men). The purpose of the march was to highlight the continued need to address the gender imbalance in the international film industry, and the demonstration was organised by 50502020, a French campaign focused on gender equality in cinema.
