Masterclass with award winning director Thom Zimny

Award-winning director, artist editor and producer Thom Zimny will lead a Masterclass for filmmakers in Auckland in August. Known for his award-winning documentaries, Zimny will take filmmakers inside his process from the research phase through to the edit, with special focus on the edit process. Works discussed will include his film The Gift: The Journey of Johnny Cash and Elvis Presley: The Searcher. If you go along, it would be helpful if you have seen The Gift: The Journey of Johnny Cash at NZIFF beforehand (Tuesday 30 July or Wednesday 31 July). The Masterclass is part of the New Zealand International Film Festival 2019, and is run by the Directors & Editors Guild of New Zealand (DEGNZ) on behalf of NZIFF.

Catalyst He Kauahi funding wins

We're thrilled to see the hard work of these WIFT members is paying off via funding from the Catalyst He Kauahi. The fund supports New Zealand filmmakers to progress their talents and make exceptional, high-end narrative short films that will be the catalyst for change in their career. These members won grants from the April 2019 round:

  • Writer and director Rachel Ross, and producers Morgan Leigh Stewart and Samantha Dutton for Green. This team gets a $75,000 grant towards their short film and $10,000 towards development of their feature concept.
  • Writer and director Gillian Ashurst, and producers Catherine Fitzgerald and Nadia Maxwell for The Meek. This team gets a $90,000 grant towards their short film and $10,000 towards development of their feature concept.
  • Producer Craig Gainsborough-Waring for Impossible. This project gets a $90,000 grant towards the short film and $10,000 towards development of the feature concept.
