Precious taonga to be protected says TVNZ

TVNZ has removed Getty Images' access to the TVNZ archive of dedicated M?ori screen but will retain footage from its flagship M?ori news programme, Te Karere. This means taonga like Waka Huia, Koha and Marae are carved out of TVNZ's sales deal with Getty Images, and though this material has never been sold internationally it removes the potential for future sale. Meanwhile, TVNZ says, "Te Karere is an integral part of our daily news gathering - we share resources and stories across the newsroom. It's pivotal to helping lead the revitalisation and normalisation of te reo M?ori while producing breaking news from a M?ori perspective."
TVNZ's Nevak Rogers says archive access arrangements are best determined through Te Puni K?kiri's current M?ori Media Sector Shift Review, given the stake everyone in the industry has in this precious material. Rogers says TVNZ acknowledges the issue of the company's archives has been a topic of ongoing industry concern, particularly in relation to archive access and the protection of intellectual property.
"The rights, retention and access to te reo and tikanga M?ori screen content, including archiving is a key focus of the M?ori Media Sector Shift Review led by Te Puni K?kiri," says Rogers. "TVNZ is willing to pass the mantle of kaitiakitanga for fully-funded programmes such as Koha,Marae and Waka Huia to an appropriate M?ori body to ensure the onscreen preservation of our language and culture for generations to come."
