Women played essential behind-the-scenes roles as the American movie industry was taking off. So what happened? In the article below, The New Yorker's Margaret Talbot discovers that as the film industry became an increasingly modern, capitalist enterprise, consolidated around a small number of leading studios, each with specialized departments, it grew harder for women, especially newcomers, to slip into nascent cinematic ventures, find something that needed doing, and do it.

Actors and directors workshop with Ian Hughes

Actors and directors, here's your chance to get together and practise your craft. The Rehearsal & Performance series of workshops run by DEGNZ provides a supportive environment for directors of any experience level to develop their skills in communicating with actors to achieve great performances. The final workshop of 2019 is with Ian Hughes (pictured below), an experienced actor who is now primarily a TV and commercials director, with credits on Step Dave and nearly 300 episodes of Shortland Street. There are spaces for four directors and eight actors to participate - click here to register. Registrations close on Thursday 14 November at 1pm.
