Posted Tuesday 04 Feb 2020

Calling all filmmakers! The 2020 Aesthetica Short Film competition is now open and seeking new filmmaking talent - that's you! Celebrating its 10th anniversary, ASFF wants to hear from filmmakers pushing the boundaries of cinema. Submit your short films, feature films and VR works for consideration. ASFF accepts works across multiple genres including: advertising, animation, artists' film, comedy, dance, documentary, drama, experimental, fashion, music video and thriller. ASFF prizes include £1,000 (about $NZ2,003.50) awarded to the Best of Festival Winner, and short films that are chosen to screen may be eligible for a BAFTA award in the future.

Entries close 31 May 2020.

Welcome to the New Year! Mark your diaries now for the WIFT Awards on 2 April at the ASB Waterfront Theatre, and if you're travelling, stay on for the Big Screen Symposium! Ticket prices for the fabulous WIFT Awards will be the same as in 2018, thanks to production company LoserKid which is generously sponsoring the opening drinks. Members tickets will cost $80, non-members $110, and they go on sale mid-February. WIFT Awards judging is on 12 February so watch out for the finalists' announcement pretty soon after that.

WIFT NZ membership is now at 960, and while we don't usually tout for members that 1,000 figure is tantalising! Encourage your colleagues to join up so we make that figure quickly! Almost half of you have now responded to the ethnicity question - amazing - so it would be outstanding if the rest of you did too. (For those of you who think we are mad, we couldn't use a collator like Survey Monkey because we have to manually enter your ethnicity into our Excel database - so that's 470 emails we've processed so far!)

Amidst the normal range of programming you expect from us, we will be putting an emphasis on matters like health and safety, understanding contracts, rights, and negotiating skills this year. Watch out for these essential for everyone workshops!

Remember - we offer 'maternity leave' relief from your membership fees!
Remember - the video slot in enews is there for you to show your work so send it in!
Remember - promote yourself / let other members know more about you by putting your hand up to be featured in the profile spot on the website.

A number of our members have features coming out this year - watch out for lots of coverage of these films and make sure you support them in the opening week! The first of these will be Kerry Warkia's The Legend of Baron To'a. See the next issue of enews for an interview with Kerry and a ticket competition. So much more to come! Make sure you send us your news - email office@wiftnz.org.nz!!

Onwards and upwards!!
