Jordan Peele’s Oscar-winning film tops the Writers Guild of America’s just-released list of the 101 Greatest Screenplays of the 21st Century (So Far).
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, The Social Network, Parasite, No Country for Old Men and Moonlight round out the top six - and all of them are written by men. All of them won a Screenplay Oscar, but three of the next four on the WGA’s list — There Will Be Blood (No. 7), Inglorious Basterds (No. 8) and Memento (No. 10) — did not. They're all written by men too. The No. 9 script, Almost Famous, took Academy Award for Adapted Screenplay. And yes, that one was written by a man!
It's not until No. 12 that you find Annie Mumulo and Kristen Wiig with Bridesmaids (2011), and Diana Ossana at No. 13 for 2005’s Brokeback Mountain, which she wrote with Larry McMurtry.
Greta Gerwig placed a pair of screenplays on the list: Lady Bird (pictured, No. 16; 2007) and Little Women (No. 89; 2019).
