Tickets are selling fast to this event so Wellingtonians, be in quick to get yours! Congratulations to director Lula Cucchiara whose feature documentary on artist Fiona Clark will premiere in Wellington on 18 November, as part of the New Zealand International Film Festival. Lula also co-produced the doco with fellow WIFT NZ member Matt Noonan and Siobhan Price.
Photographer Fiona Clark shocked 1970s New Zealand with her documentary images of Auckland’s burgeoning queer scene. The artist’s early images captured the heady local excitement of gay liberation that mainstream society was not ready to accept; her negatives were censored, images were pulled from exhibition, and art dealers refused to work with her.
Four decades later, Fiona Clark: Unafraid recounts how the photographer overcame censorship, homophobia, sexism and debilitating physical injuries to become one of our most respected social documentarians.
Catch this film’s premiere at the Embassy Theatre in Wellington on Thursday 18 November at 6:15 pm followed by a Q&A with director Lula Cucchiara & artist Fiona Clark.
