The first woman to receive two Academy Award Best Director nominations

Director Dame Jane Campion made history this week by winning Best Director at the 94th Academy Awards; she is the first woman to be nominated twice for Best Director. Her film The Power of the Dog, shot in Central Otago, had a total of 12 nominations, including Best Picture and Best Adapted Screenplay.

In the Best Director field, Campion was up against the likes of Steven Spielberg for his remake of West Side Story and Kenneth Branagh for Belfast.

She's now the third woman to win an Academy Award for Best Director, the others are Kathryn Bigelow (in 2010 for The Hurt Locker) and Chloé Zhao (in 2021 for Nomadland).

In 1994, Campion was nominated for Best Director for The Piano, but didn't win; instead she took away the award for Best Original Screenplay.
