Congratulations to producer Kerry Warkia, recipient of the The Leanne K. Ferrer Trailblazer Award, presented by Pacific Islanders in Communications (PIC)! This annual award is given to a creative content luminary of Pacific Islander descent.
Kerry (Papua New Guinean / Scottish) will be representing Kāinga at the Hawaii International Film Festival, where the film has its North American Premiere, and where she will receive the above award on 13 November.
Kāinga is an anthology film of eight stories exploring the immigrant experience of eight Asian women in Aotearoa New Zealand by eight Pan-Asian female directors.
As a producer Kerry has indeed been a trailblazer. She and her production company Brown Sugar Apple Grunt have been at the forefront of some of New Zealand's most innovative content for the big and small screens, including two other anthology films: Waru, which features the work of eight Māori female film-makers and Vai which features the work of Pacific women, and the locally made TV series Good Grief, which is broadcast on Sundance TV in the United States.
