This first-time feature from writer-director Charlotte Wells has been bowling critics and audiences over since its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival last year.
With beautiful subtlety, Aftersun tells the story of a father and daughter, flitting between the past and the present through shaky home video footage and holiday memories. Set in the early 2000s, the film follows 11-year-old Sophie on a holiday with her father, Calum, at a Turkish resort on the eve of his 31st birthday. As a world of adolescence creeps into view, beyond her eye Calum struggles under the weight of life outside of fatherhood.
The New York Times said, "Wells, with the unaffected precision of a lyric poet, is very nearly reinventing the language of film, unlocking the medium’s often dormant potential to disclose inner worlds of consciousness and feeling."
The Guardian called it a "stylistically daring, emotionally piercing and beautifully understated tale of love and loss".
