This year's MIFF opening night film, Sundance winner and Toronto Film Festival selection, Shayda is executive produced by Cate Blanchett and is Australia’s submission for Best International Film at Oscars 2024. Directed by Noora Niasari and starring Zar Amir Ebrahimi (2022 Cannes’ best actress award winner for Holy Spider) and Leah Purcell, the film tells the story of Iranian mother Shayda, who finds refuge in an Australian women’s shelter with her six-year-old daughter. Over Persian New Year, they take solace in Nowruz rituals and new beginnings, but when her estranged husband re-enters their lives, Shayda’s path to freedom is jeopardised.
Shayda is in NZ cinemas from 26 October.
