The course will be taught by Gavin McGibbon. Gavin is a freelance screenwriter who is currently developing a TV Series and a Feature Film with the Executive Producer of the Emmy nominated hit TV show Severance. This is a special course exploring, what are the most important decisions you need to make about your ideas? What choices should you make to ensure your scripts become more dynamic and engaging, hooking readers and having audiences on the edge of their seats?
On the course, you will do in-classes exercises to enhance your storytelling skills, while also learning about how successful movies made important story choices that ensured they connected with audiences. During the eight-week course you will have the opportunity to workshop both your treatment and the first act of your feature film, receiving feedback both from the teacher and your peers.
Gavin has extensive experience as a scriptwriting teacher, having recently taught the IIML’s prestigious MA Scriptwriting course at Victoria University. He ran an MA Screenwriting Programme in the UK. He has also given screenwriting workshops for Script to Screen.
The Wellington based, in-person course runs for eight weeks on Monday evenings 6.30-
9.00pm, August 12th – September 30th and costs $472. Email gavmcgibbon@gmail.com to secure a spot.
“Working with Gavin on my SEED script was a fantastic experience. His observations on
character, plot and genre were invaluable in the evolution of my script. His deep love of films is
both infectious and keeps him feeling fresh and up to date. He is always respectful of the
material while at the same time pushing hard to ensure it develops and evolves. He can bring
both a big picture view and focus on the tiniest details of any story. My script took a giant leap
forward as a direct result of working with Gavin.” -Brian Challis, NZWG SEED recipient
