This Auckland Theatre Company production Boys & Girls, directed by WIFT member Eleanor Bishop, opens this week in Auckland. It's a powerful female story that many women can resonate with. Get tickets to see this!
It begins with a chance encounter at an airport in Naples. How it ends will make you question whether it's ever possible to truly know the people we love. At first, they can’t get enough of each other. “Our love was intense. Actually, it was insane.” But, as the heat of their passion gives way to the banalities of domestic life, her star continues to rise while his starts to fade.
As her story unfolds, from being madly in love, through frazzled interactions with her two squabbling kids, to confessional moments of heartbreaking intimacy, what went wrong with their relationship is slowly revealed. Raw and unflinching, Girls & Boys explores the dark shadow on the far side of love and asks what anyone of us is capable of.
The Independent UK review gave it 4 stars and said; “The show is jolly, then it punches you in the gut and it sends out a feminist message of shocking power.”
It will be on at ASB Waterfront Theatre until 22 Sept.
There is a content warning that goes with this show as it does have a rather shocking twist, and they suggest that the audience is largely aged 40 – 60 career or working women, or those who appreciate arts & culture and live theatre experiences.
