Congratulations to our WIFT members whose projects have been selected for the Sydney Film Festival, taking place in June 2025!
The Haka Party Incident - On May 1, 1979, the Maori and Pasifika activist group He Taua confronted University of Auckland engineering students over their annual “haka party”– a racist and drunken mock haka – in what became a pivotal moment in Aotearoa’s race relations. Katie Wolfe’s stirring documentary revisits the event through archival footage and unfiltered contemporary interviews.
Marlon Williams: NgĀ Ao E Rua – Two Worlds - An intimate four-year portrait of performer Marlon Williams as he writes and records his first te reo Māori language album Te Whare Tīwekaweka. This debut feature documentary by Ursula Grace Williams is a stunning, enigmatic film of Aotearoa’s taonga, Marlon Williams. (Currently, in theatres in Aotearoa)
Pike River - The powerful true story of Anna Osborne (Melanie Lynskey) and Sonya Rockhouse (Robyn Malcolm), and their fight for justice following New Zealand’s deadliest modern mining disaster. This impactful screenplay is written by WIFT member Fiona Samuels, produced by Vicky Pope, and shot by cinematographer Gin Loane.
Went Up The Hill - Vicky Krieps (Phantom Thread) and Dacre Montgomery (Stranger Things) star in this haunting, wholly original tale of grief and possession set in remote New Zealand. Produced by Vicky Pope. The team also includes Michelle Turner as Line Producer and Kirsty Cameron as Costume Designer. Executive Produced by Jill Macnab.
Incredible to see all your hard work screening internationally!
