A new film screening is set to highlight a bold chapter in Aotearoa’s cinematic history - showcasing short films from talented Black creatives living in New Zealand. The collection reflects the rich tapestry of African and Caribbean experiences and creativity within Aotearoa’s growing arts scene.
Obsidian & Seen: Black Films in Aotearoa is an 80-minute cinematic journey featuring twelve stunning works from New Zealand’s most talented Black creatives and allies. From short films and documentaries to music videos and animations, audiences can expect a vibrant blend of vivid storytelling and striking visuals — each piece a testament to the diversity, resilience, and brilliance of Black artistry in Aotearoa.
This special screening is part of the first-ever Aotearoa Festival of Black Arts, proudly presented by Black Creatives Aotearoa - a groundbreaking event dedicated to amplifying Black voices and artistic expression.
Programme co-curator Graham Vincent says these screenings are vital in breaking down stereotypes, fostering empathy, and expanding cultural understanding.
“When Black characters are portrayed with depth, authenticity, and complexity, audiences everywhere are invited to see beyond the narrow confines of race and geography,” he says. “These stories remind us of our shared humanity.”
The evening will conclude with a short Q&A session, giving audiences the opportunity to hear directly from some of the filmmakers about their creative process, inspirations, and vision for the future of Black storytelling on screen.
Obsidian & Seen: Black Films in Aotearoa is on 14 December 2025. Doors open 1pm. Screening starts 2pm. At Capitol Cinema, 610 Dominion Road, Balmoral, Auckland
