Playmarket NZ and Te Pou Theatre: Free Workshop for Māori Writers

Te Arero Toi is a free one-day scriptwriting workshop for Māori writers that aims to increase the number of plays written in te reo Māori. Through a mix of practical writing exercises and kōrero, the mission is to amplify pūrākau from te ao Māori by growing the confidence of our te reo Māori writers to create works for te ataamira whakaari.

Te Arero Toi grew from a hui taumata held in 2023 that identified the large number of te reo Māori plays written for tamariki and the need to inspire more scripts in te reo for older audiences. Over the past two years, Te Arero Toi has brought together Māori writers from all mediums to energise, inspire, and strengthen the voices of kaituhi Māori who believe in the power of reo.
