"A Dog's Show" Makes the Leap from the Small Screen to the Big Screen

For those of us who grew up watching "A Dog's Show" on the telly every week, some excellent news!

Principal photography has begun on the feature film of the same name, and inspired by, A Dog’s Show.

The film stars Graham McTavish (Outlander, The Hobbit), David Wenham (The Lord of the Rings, Lion), and acclaimed New Zealand actress Theresa Healey (Go Girls, Filthy Rich) and Kiwi newcomer Unaiki Stephens-Jones.

Set against New Zealand’s picturesque rural heartland and shot across the Wairarapa and Wellington, the film celebrates the enduring bond between humans and their four-legged companions through the beloved tradition of sheepdog trials.

Written and directed by Alex Galvin, the production promises to deliver a rich tapestry of character, landscape, and emotion. The film is produced by Mark Westerby and Celia Jaspers with veteran Tim White as Executive Producer.

“We’re thrilled to have David and Theresa join the cast,” says A Dog’s Show writer and director, Alex Galvin. “Their talent and energy bring a fresh dimension to the story, and alongside Graham, we have something truly special in the making.”

“The script is beautiful, funny, and deeply moving,” said Wenham. “It’s a story about connection — to the land, to animals, and to each other.”

Distributed by Transmission Films, A Dog’s Show is slated for release in late 2026, with international distribution plans to be announced.
