Unlikely Kin - the new film from award-winning WIFT NZ filmmaker Kim Webby has its final DocEdge Screening in Christchurch on August 2nd at 7pm at the Jack Mann Theatre, Kōawa Studio. There is one screening only in Christchurch.
Unlikely Kin follows Ngāti Wai father and son Hori Parata and Te Kaurinui Parata over six years, as aging Hori passes on his matauranga Māori, about cultural whale harvests, kiore preservation and traditional kaitiakitanga to his son - passing on legacy and growing leadership.
Kim won the Raye Freedman Legacy Award at the Doc Edge Awards this year, an award richly deserved after her many years telling stories from marginalised communities that might not otherwise have been told.
The accolade is named after Raye Freedman, an inspirational woman who became a lawyer when her own education was denied in favour of her brothers. Raye arrived in New Zealand from Winnipeg, Canada in 1941 with $4 in her pocket. She became a speech therapist and eventually a successful property developer and arts philanthropist. She was resilient, ignored boundaries and followed her dreams.
