The creators and stars of the award-winning new Kiwi comedy-horror film The Weed Eaters will be blazing across twelve regions in Aotearoa this April on an unmissable 21-stop tour ahead of the movie’s hotly anticipated April 30 theatrical release.
From Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland to Murihiku Southland, Callum Devlin (director/producer), Finnius Teppett (scriptwriter/producer), and actor-producers Alice May Connolly and Annabel Kean will light up cinema screens with their debut feature, under the watchful eye of longtime Wiftie and movie maven Gemma Gracewood their masterful EP.
This brilliantly bonkers kiwi film follows four millennial slackers on a secluded New Year’s getaway.
Stumbling across their reclusive host’s long-forgotten stash of ancient cannabis, their holiday high takes a nightmare turn into accidental cannibalism… Soon the unsuspecting stoners’ friendships, survival skills, and dietary preferences are put to the test in a film that wickedly combines the deadly and the deadpan.
Since its buzzy world premiere last year at Auckland’s Civic Theatre as part of Whānau Mārama: New Zealand International Film Festival, and with the backing of the team behind modern-day horror classics Talk to Me, Bring Her Back and The Babadook, THE WEED EATERS has screened at film festivals from Dublin to Yogyakarta to Buenos Aires, racking up prizes including SXSW Sydney’s Best Feature Film Award and the Jury Prize at Gérardmer International Fantastic Film Festival.
Taskmaster NZ favourite David Correos is in the cast alongside The Bats’ bassist Paul Kean, and an all-New Zealand soundtrack features bangers from the likes of Dave Dobbyn, Lawrence Arabia and Mousey. Along with these local ingredients, the NZ Classification Office has confirmed what lies in store for moviegoers with an R13 rating (for violence, offensive language, drug use and content that may disturb), making THE WEED EATERS a brand-new cult classic for (almost) all the family.
Bringing hilarity to The Hollywood, mayhem to Masterton and gore to Gore, the cast and crew will treat moviegoers to a series of super special celebratory evenings of meat-pack raffles, scream competitions, surprise guests, Q&As, and of course a chance to pose with a 6-foot fork — duh.
