The first public screening of director Dame Gaylene Preston's Bread and Roses was at the NZIFF in 1993. Three decades on, the digital version, remastered from the 16mm original, is on show at the New Zealand International Film Festival.
Produced by Robin Laing, Bread and Roses is an adaptation of activist Sonja Davies’ autobiography, and beautifully captures the heart-breaking social and societal conditions of mid-century women in New Zealand.
It comes highly recommended: Patricia raved about it after attending the Sunday screening in Auckland, and says,
